When I first started learning about the tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) community, it was during a particularly turbulent time. There was a big scandal involving Hasbro, the owners of Dungeons & Dragons, almost destroying the independent D&D creator landscape. The outrage that followed was understandable, and plenty of sensational posts and videos popped up across the internet.
Which is why discovering JP Coovert around that same time felt like a breath of fresh air. His videos are always delightful, inventive, and filled with joy. Just look watch the video below about crafting your own a set of simple, hand-made combat tokens and tell me that doesn't look like a fun.
The real highlight for me, though, is PJ’s latest project: Dragon Town and the Darkness Below. It’s an adventure designed for any fantasy tabletop RPG, whether you play Dungeons & Dragons, Shadowdark, or Level Up Advanced 5E. This beautifully crafted hardback book is also available in an optional box set, which includes a Game Master’s screen, coins, magic item cards, maps, and other cool extras depending on which stretch goals are reached.
I’ve always loved boxed sets created by indy creators. I've even made one myself! There’s something magical about seeing all these items tied to a common theme, neatly packaged together in a thoughtfully designed set. The moment I saw Dragon Town, I knew this was the kind of thing I wanted to create someday.
Needless to say, I backed the project at the level that gets me the full boxed set.. Here's to RPGs and small-batch creativity!
